Feature requests and ideas, what can we do for you?

Can we talk about moderators?

Posted 11 Months ago by Weird Occurance

Hey all -

I'm going to start out by saying I'm aware of the controversy and disappointment surrounding the Denida Global Mod position, but I don't want this thread to turn into Denida bashing. Please keep discussions related to that decision here:
https://gtforall.com/thread/regarding_the_debacle_of_my_mod_position
I'd like to use this thread, instead, to talk about the future of moderation at this site. Everything I bring up is fair game for responses, so please, let's have a discussion.

First off, I'm sorry I didn't announce my Denida pick in advance when I first announced that I was going to be the owner of the new GT. That oversight was my bad and I feel that all of you deserve an apology. I'm not going to try to justify it or explain my thought process outside of saying I was NOT actively trying to keep this decision a secret. I intend to be transparent with this community and so, this was a mistake. I apologize.

Secondly, I wish I had had more contact with the respectable admins and moderators of GTX0 - and yes, Dooku, Moonray, and Jet, I believe you three are extremely capable and respectable. During the two week span between my announcement and launch, most of my free time was spent coding with Xhin and revamping the rules for this site. Maybe I should've tried reaching out to start communications back then. I'm sorry I did not approach you, but my hope is that you will not begrudge me for not picking or approaching you. A lot of this was based on my personal comfort zone and what I actually had time for and was not meant to be an insult to any of you. I apologize if you were offended by my decision.

Thirdly, I would like to hire additional Global Mods here, but have a hard time justifying it in my mind without having enough activity to back the decision. I know I shook the community's faith in me, and this site, by picking someone with a horrible reputation as my first mod. I needed him during launch so I could try to focus more on coding and planning for this site's future. But I never expected him to be my only mod. With enough activity, I'd be inclined to hire another Global Mod with a better standing in this community.

My primary concern is twofold.
a) If I hire a mod now, they won't have much to do because the site's not extremely active.
b) As a result of that, will you all just see it as an optics approach to drum up usage?

I wouldn't want to hire someone to waste their time.
And I wouldn't want this place over-moderated to the point of losing a neutral, clean slate perspective towards our users. Even Clarkey, a former GTX0 mod, commented in the Denida thread I linked above to advise against over-moderation instead of giving this place a little space to thrive. Granted, it needs to live on more than just drama all the time. That's a trap that I do not want to fall into.

All of this said, what I'm trying to ask of you guys is:
Can you see yourselves giving this place enough of a chance for me to justify adding another mod to the team?

I obviously want this place to thrive. And I recognize the chicken and the egg aspect of this conundrum; if users don't trust my decision to hire Denida, they're wary of the site and don't want to come, but I don't want to instate a moderator figurehead just to get users to come back because that doesn't feel ethical.

Maybe an open discussion about this will be helpful.

Additionally, anyone who feels comfortable upholding the site rules, who would be interested in a Global Mod position, I'm happy to talk to you if you reach out. This will be necessary to take a step forward one day, anyway:

Email: teamgtforall@gmail.com

Please keep your responses civil.

Thanks!

I would think that it would be better to have an excess of mods for the moment. Staff bloat can be a problem, but it is not an immediate one.

If you extended honest communication to a user whose judgement in these matters I respect and that user accepted your offer of modship, it would do more to increase my confidence in this site than anything you have done so far.

And yes, Dooku, Moonray, and Jet

Dooku would be great for a variety of reasons not the least of which how I've seen him moderate in the past if he still wants to be a mod. I can't say I know enough about how Moonray and Jet would moderate since I haven't seen it in action much if ever and I don't feel like I've quite talked to them enough to know personally that well so I can't speak for that. Pacman I personally think from what I've heard from him is also a great option for a variety of reasons if you could convince him to be on board imo.

I fully understand the need for a "fresh start", and hold no sore feelings as far as decisions to re-hire go.

My name seems to keep coming up in these discussions, and while I very much appreciate the community's confidence in me, I have to say I'm not particularly interested in moderating at this time. The site needs staff who will be active and engaged in the re-launch and re-building of the community, and I can't commit to that at this time. But I hope to contribute to activity as a user.

That said, Jet Presto and/or Pacman would be excellent options if you decide to hire additional staff. Moonray too, of course, but I suspect he may not be interested.

Can you see yourselves giving this place enough of a chance for me to justify adding another mod to the team?

While staff bloat is (and has been) a concern, I don't think having two moderators would hurt anything at this point. We all have lives outside of GT, and having an extra moderator to step in if one is busy/sick/etc. makes a lot of sense.

I’m seeing this as a common consensus.

And the name Pacman has come up a few times now, which is encouraging.

I’m open to talking to anyone with any interest in joining the team.

Thanks for all the contributions so far, Galbraith, Grey, and Dooku.

For the record, I have absolutely no problems with not having been approached. I basically left the site back in Feb/March and have only made one or two random appearances between then and now. I also stepped down from being an admin a few years prior to that, so I really don't think anyone should feel bad for not approaching me regarding that sort of thing.

That said I am always willing to offer my opinion and advise on any topic for anyone who seeks it.

I think right now there is a perspective that the site is being run by a clubhouse of two friends. Whilst that may be an unfair perspective, it's still the image that is being put over (in my opinion).

I personally think you should bring someone into your team from the community and you already know who my recommendation for that person is. It would help alleviate many people's concerns and providing it is a person the community knows and trusts, it will help reassure them that their concerns are being heard.

Just as you had your comfort zone before launching, the community have theirs and many of them don't know you, some of us only know Denida by reputation and his actions since his return. I think that's the biggest reason you need a trusted voice on your team, so that early on people can be reassured. Over time I am sure people will get to know you and Denida better and judge you on how you run the site rather than historical events.

I do not believe hiring a third person would constitute overmoderation at this stage.

I'm curious, do you have an intentionally selective memory or do you just genuinely never remember anything ever? Perhaps you only remember me when it's convenient to do so?

Suppose it doesn't matter either way, I just find it odd that you would make such a claim when I can very clearly remember many, many interactions with yourself.

It's not selective. Anyone who talks to or still talked to me for a long time should either know I have a very bad memory or they think I'm making it up. The truth is almost always the former. I remember you of course, I just don't want to suggest mods lightly when I barely remember anything from like almost a decade ago and I barely talked to you in private to keep that up much at all since so all in all it kind of feels like as far as my memory goes I don't know you all that well. I've seen you post on the site but that doesn't necessarily say much. I mean, some people seemed to apparently think I was a great guy who would never do certain things despite some of my outbursts until this year because of how I posted on the site and discord (for a while). Not comparing you to me at all, that's just a recent reason I think it's not the best idea to judge people you don't talk to in private. It's not that I think you're a bad choice at all from what I remember, I just really only wanted to be sure that I shouted out only the ones I considered the best on multiple levels. So it's not really just a thing of memory or not knowing you all that well. I just feel like GT is in a rather dire state.

For what it's worth, seeing people shoutout you and Jet is reassuring.

I do remember random things rather well or often I guess but idk why or how that happens.

Sorry if I offended.

when I can very clearly remember many, many interactions with yourself.

Unfortunately it seems like I easily leave an impression for better or worse. or both.

I appreciate everything in this paragraph, thank you.
I’d like to get to this point.

Additionally, I’ll speak to the individual you endorsed.

pacman would be an excellent choice if he's interested. Like Jet Presto he managed to stay neutral during the various world forum rall.

I don't think an extra moderator would cause moderator bloat -- the ban evasion situation the other night where the special tool was used is a good example of why another moderator would be helpful.

Fair enough, I just didn't know if it was a memory thing or not.

Well, for transparency, I was not exactly "neutral." I had opinions and feelings on a number of things. I'm just 34 years old and regularly hurt myself by falling asleep. I don't have time or energy to participate in that much anonymous internet drama.

That's what this place needs most of all.

Would you be willing to talk about joining the moderation team?
