Can you explain more about what you mean regarding music being written out? I think that I might have significant objections, depending on your explanation.

It's like with any other kind of artist. We see something inside, or hear something, or ponder something and there is an urge to creatively express it. This something may be a brief vision or even the awareness of a complete work of some kind, perhaps an image of a sculpture or a piece of music or a story or language ... or a world. For me these often come through dreams; but also from conscious effort.

The urge is ... persistent. For me, it's often patient, will not easily be denied. Putting proverbial pen to paper gives the vision a kind of existence. If I write a story or an article about some aspect of the world, it allows me and others to read and share the narrative experience. If it's a picture, it allows people to see what I see. If it's music, it allows folks to hear what I hear. All, of course, taking into consideration my ability, or lack thereof, to write well, draw well or transcribe well.

I'd be curious to learn your significant objections!

In other words, you're talking about the impulse to express in general, not about the specific medium? I was taking exception to what I perceived as an implication that music had to be expressed textually in order to be legitimate. If that was not your intended implication, then I likely have no issue with this.

By "textual" do you mean written on a piece of paper with notes and staves or in some kind of tab / ABC notation scheme?

I certainly don't mean that only "written music" is legit. Only that when we've got music in the head, it needs to be expressed! It can be written on paper. It can be sung or hummed. It can be done up digitally. It can be played on instruments.

It's the expression of a matter of creativity that I'm on about. And yes, regardless of medium and material used.

Yes, that's what I was referring to by "textually" (please forgive my phone's typographical error).

I certainly don't mean that only "written music" is legit.

Good, this was what I was concerned about. Thank you for clarifying.
