Me playing around with colors.

Red: Hue = 0 degrees or 360 degrees.
Yellow: Hue = 90 degrees.
Green: Hue = 180 degrees.
Blue: Hue = 270 degrees.

Orange: Hue = 45 degrees.
Chartreuse: Hue = 135 degrees.
Cyan: Hue = 225 degrees.
Magenta: Hue = 315 degrees.

Black: Lightness = 0%.
White: Lightness = 100%.
50% Grey: Lightness = 50%, Saturation = 0%.

25% Grey: Lightness = 25%, Saturation=0%.
75% Grey: lightness = 75%, Saturation = 0%.

So I think I’m planning Adpihi and Reptigan to have up to 85 basic color terms. (Subject to change!)
I’m organizing them by Lightness, Saturation, and Hue.

The first set of 11 colors I’ll call “primary”.
They’ll vary L and S from 0% to 100% as multiples of 50%; and vary H by multiples of 90 degrees from 0 degrees to 360 degrees (but H=0 and H=360 are the same).

If L=0% or L=100% neither S nor H matter.
L=0% is black, and L=100% is white.
If S=0% then H doesn’t matter; the color is on the gray scale.
L=50% S=0% is neutral gray.

There are eight more colors in this set.
L=50% S=100% H=0 degrees or 360 degrees: RED
L=50% S=50% H=0 or 360: RED-GRAY
L=50% S=100% H=90 degrees: YELLOW
L=50% S=50% H=90 degrees: TAN
L=50% S=100% H=180 degrees: GREEN

The next set of 34 colors, I’ll call “secondary colors”. They come in three subsets.
The first of these subsets contains 18 colors.
Lightness is an odd multiple of 25%. Saturation is still a multiple of 50%. Hue is still a multiple of 90 degrees.

I will probably improve the English names of the 45 colors so far by looking up the Web standard HTML names of those.
I do not know if I can or want to have 45 basic (monomorphemic underived) color terms in Adpihi and Reptigan.
Maybe I’ll go with 11 basic color terms for those “primary” colors, and for the next 34 make them be either basic or “quasi-basic”.
I’ll define “quasi-basic”, in this context, to mean either monomorphemic but derived, or underived but bimorphemic.

The “tertiary” colors will also consist of three subsets.
  • Both Lightness and Saturation are odd multiples of 25%. Hue is a multiple of 90 degrees. So this subset contains 16 colors.
  • Lightness is an odd multiple of 25%, and Hue is an odd multiple of 45 degrees. Saturation is a multiple of 50%. This subset doesn’t contain any colors with S=0%, because LIGHT GRAY and DARK GREY were already covered in the first subset of “secondary” colors. So this subset contains 16 colors.
  • Saturation is an odd multiple of 25%, and Hue is an odd multiple of 45 degrees. Lightness is 50%. So this subset contains 8 colors.

    I would like to have names for these colors that didn’t imply they were all mixes of the primary and secondary colors; for instance, not hyphenated compounds of the names of those earlier colors. They might have to be quasi-basic or “meta-quasibasic”.
    “Meta-quasibasic” means derived and bimorphemic, or underived and trimorphemic.



    There are an additional 16 colors to fill up an Adpihi schoolkid’s crayon box of 101 colors.
    These are the colors where both Lightness and Saturation are odd multiples of 25%, and Hue is an odd multiple of 45 degrees.
    I never had any ambition to make any of these colors ‘basic’ or anything like “basic”.

    There’s another way to decide how basic or non-basic those same 101 colors would be.
    Give each color one nonbasic point if H is not a multiple of 90 degrees.
    Give each color one nonbasic point if L is not a multiple of 50%.
    Give each color one nonbasic point if S is 50%; and two nonbasic points if S is 25% or 75%.

    That gets us 7 perfectly basic colors; black, white, neutral gray, red, yellow, green, and blue.

    There are also sixteen colors with only one non-basic point.
  • Keeping L at 50% and S at 100%, there are four colors wherein H is an odd multiple of 45 degrees. Orange, chartreuse, cyan, and magenta.
  • Keeping S at 100% and H at multiples of 90 degrees, there are eight colors where L is 25% or 75%. Dark red, light red, dark yellow, light yellow, dark green, light green, dark blue, and light blue.
  • Keeping L at 50% and H at multiples of 90, there are four colors wherein S=50%; red-gray, yellow-gray, green-gray, and blue-gray.

    I don’t think 23 basic color terms is wildly excessive. Natlangs tend to have not more than twelve, so this is less than twice that.

    But so far I haven’t handled any colors with saturation at 25% or 75%.

    Four sets of colors have only two non-basic points.

  • Eight of them have L=50% and H a multiple of 90 degrees and S an odd multiple of 25%.
    Reddish gray, grayish red, yellowish gray, grayish yellow, greenish gray, grayish green, bluish gray, and grayish blue.

  • Ten of them have L an odd multiple of 25% and H an odd multiple of 45 degrees but S either 0% or 100%.
    The two with S=0% are light gray and dark gray, depending on whether L is 75% or 25%.
    The eight with S=100% are light orange, dark orange, light chartreuse (gotta be a better name!), dark chartreuse, light cyan, dark cyan, light magenta, and dark magenta.

  • Eight of them have S=50% and L an odd multiple of 25% and H a multiple of 90 degrees.
    My English names for them are { light | dark } { red- | yellow- | green- | blue- } -gray.

  • Four of them have S=50% and L=50% and H an odd multiple of 45 degrees.
    Orange-gray, chartreuse-gray (need better name!), cyan-gray, magenta-gray.

    That adds up to 30 colors with two nonbasic points.
    I’d like to have their colorterms be as nontechnical and natural-seeming as possible. The easiest or maybe most natural way would be to derive them (as monomorphemic words) from things that exist in nature on Adpihi but not on Earth. But that might leave readers or players scratching their heads. It might be better to somehow come up with a regular way to derive them bimorphemically from the first 23 colorterms.
    53 basic colorterms is a major departure from natlangs, so I might have to limit my ambition to making this latest 30 be quasibasic or metabasic or almost-basic or next-to-basic.

    There are another 32 colors that have three nonbasic points. I might have to give up any ambition to make their color terms as basic as I can make them.
    The final 16 colors have four nonbasic points; they’re the ones I left out in my first classification.

    If a hex code is three bytes #rrggbb and we want to look only at colors with Saturation=0% then we want to look at those where rr=gg=bb.
    We can get a five-color gray scale by limiting the bytes’ values to #00, #ff, #80, #40, #c0.

    If I go on to explicate or elaborate on “group E”, which consists of all of the “web-safe” colors except those in Group A, I don’t know if I’ll be able to finish before March 8 2022.
    Group E will contain 208 colors.
    Each will have a hexcode of three bytes; each byte can have any of six values independently of the values the other bytes have; and those values are the set {#00, #33, #66, #99, #cc, #ff}.

    (In my opinion spacing these hues just 12 degrees apart is much too fine-grained to be very much use. I’m not sure 15-degree intervals or intervals are all that useful either, tbh. I think 20-degree universals are great, though; as are 30-degree intervals.)

    The other new saturated colors on the surface of the color solid will consist of the following subgroups.
    24 new pastels at latitude L=60%, whose hues will be spaced 15 degrees apart;
    18 new pastels at latitude L=70%, whose hues will be spaced 20 degrees apart;
    12 new pastels at latitude L=80%, whose hues will be spaced 30 degrees apart;
    6 new pastels at latitude L=90%, whose hues will be spaced 60 degrees apart;

    I never planned to create colorterms outside of groups A and B and C and D.
    I never planned to include all of group D.
    I think groups A and B together might be reasonable. They include 12 pure hues, which is close to the natlangish limit as far as I know.
    And I don’t think 27 basic colorterms is too outlandish a stretch for a fictional conlang in a future setting. IIANM it’s just less than twice the RL natlangish maximum.

    As for colorterms inclusive of non-basic colorterms, I think any school kid probably is quite capable of using a 64-term set, like one that might cover groups A and C.

    A 125-term set, like one covering groups A and B and D, might also be within the average adult user’s grasp; it’s not too many more colorterms than there are keys on a typical 101-key keyboard. But it would probably be systematized so that, maybe, there’d be say about 16 basic terms, and systematic rules for deriving the rest from those.

    Obviously I’m just free-associating here. I should rest and think, in one order or the other.

    I’ve been thinking about how I could get close to my possibly-naive goal to have
    5 values of Lightness (viz {0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%}) and
    5 values of Saturation (viz {0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%}) and
    8 Hues ({0 degrees, 45, 90, 135, 180, 225, 270, 315 degrees}).

    If I allow each byte of a hexcode to vary thru 9 values {#00, #20, #40, #60, #80, #9F, #BF, #DF, #FF}
    I come up with 9^3 = 729 colorcodes.
    If the highest byte is #ff and the lowest byte is #00 the color is 100% saturated, S=100%, I think.
    Otherwise if the highest byte is #df and the lowest byte is #20 the color is 75% saturated I think.
    Otherwise if the highest byte is #bf and the lowest byte is #40 the color is 50% saturated I think.
    Otherwise if the highest byte is #9f and the lowest byte is #60 the color is 25% saturated I think.

    Perhaps I could investigate some subset of these 729 colors and see what they look like.

    That’s a total of 69 + 4*8 = 69 + 32 = 101 colors.

    I could omit the 16 colors in which each of L and S is an odd multiple of 25% and H is an odd multiple of 45 degrees.
    That would still leave 85 colors.

    I don’t think 101 colors is too many for a trained adult to recognize and name provided most of the terms can be systematically derived from a smaller set (perhaps 10 or 11) of monomorphemic terms.

    There is some question how recognizable the differences will be when L is close to 100% or 0% or when S is close to 0%.
    The further L is from 50%, the harder — maybe — it is to tell the differences between closely similar values of S.
    And the further L is from 50% perhaps the harder it is to distinguish between similar values of H.
    And also, the closer S is to 0%, the harder it may be to tell the differences between similar values of H.
    I don’t know whether those difficulties should just be skipped and those differences not be reflected in the vocabulary.
