Tarot

Posted Over 1 Year ago by ravenspirit

Does anyone else work with tarot cards? I have been looking for a new deck. What do you like about yours?
I lost the booklet for mine and it isn't sold anymore, nor are there online guides for it.

My old friend who used a tarot deck several times daily would swear by the Rider deck:

I used to be a lot more into it than I am, now but still have my deck, too.

I have an original Rider Waite. It was my first deck I bought when I was 15 or so. I love it but I also enjoy variety and beautiful art. The deck I currently use is the Art of Love tarot. Gorgeous but differs enough from RW that I need the damned booklet.

Why don't you use them much anymore?

No particular reason. I still think they’re beautiful and that there’s something real to tarot, but I think I go through phases with my beliefs lol

I think we all do, it's part of growing and letting go of what no longer serves us and keeping what will help us evolve. I have gone back and forth with tarot but every time I use them I gain a lot of helpful perspective. Used to be into symbology and numerology when I was younger, but I've left those behind.

I would VERY much like to find (and maybe acquire?) a Mountain Tarot.
….
Just days ago I was thinking of starting a thread about Tarot; but now I can’t remember what I’d have said.

I have never heard of a Mountain Tarot. What is it?
There are so many kinds of tarot out there now. Hubs picked up an Edgar Allen Poe deck.

It’s a photographic Tarot whose models were college students in some college in the Appalachians or the Smokies or some other American mountain range.

I’ve only ever seen one.

Did you see it in its retail form? People make their own tarot cards all the time. All you need is glossy stock paper and the images you want to use. There is a Lisa Frank tarot I want to make so badly, the deck looks like glittery unicorn barf.

I think I saw it in a museum. It didn’t look like vanity-press or amateur or DIY, if I remember right. It might have looked something like a coffee-table book. I just don’t remember very well. Pretty sure I saw it before 2009, or even before 2004.

@ravenspirit:
I don’t see any cards I recognize, but yes it’s a lot like that.
Maybe that’s it or maybe not.

Hm I just noticed that that was the "new, remastered" version. Here is the original.

Here is the original.

That shows a lot more cards; though many are shown smaller and many seem slightly damaged.
I don’t think I see the card I was looking for.
It’s hard to be sure.
The whole deck is so similar to the one I remember.

For some reason I think of Mount Berry College.

Anyway I’d love to get a copy of that deck! Even if it’s not exactly the same deck I remember seeing.

Tarot cards! I know how to play, but of covid has put the kibosh on social gatherings. So I've been playing patience with them in stead.

@elemtilas:
How do you play patience with a tarot deck?
Do you count the Fool as a one-card suit and the Trumps or Major Arcana as a 21-card suit?
Or do you leave out those 22 cards and just use the 56 cards in the four 14-card suits?

And which suits are which colors?
Do you say wands=clubs and swords=spades are black, while pentacles=diamonds and cups=hearts are red?

@chiarizio, that makes sense. I've heard of people using them as a replacement for playing cards. The history of tarot is interesting, no one really knows where they originated. I'd love to see some version of what they used to look like.

I’ve seen pics of really old-style ones.
I’ll look some up, later this afternoon after I’m back home.

@chiarizio: awesome, I'm all eyes! I went to my local shop and picked up a new deck finally. It's a Celtic Dragon tarot and I like it so far.

I’ve done Tarot before.
The only layout I still have memorized is the “Ancient Keltic method”. (Eleven cards, if i recall correctly).
Which is neither ancient nor Celtic; but at least it’s a method!
(The Holy Roman Empire was “neither holy, nor Roman, nor yet an empire”, someone (Voltaire?) said.)

I’ve done it with more than one type of deck, usually borrowed from the host, or another guest.
I’ve been told “it was a hoot!”.
I don’t believe any of it.

There’s a 39-card layout called if i recall correctly “the Da’ath pack” or something like that. I never memorized it.

My ex-wife’s Uncle Dan did a three-card method using a standard playing-card deck.

My mother’s kid brother’s oldest daughter also did the Tarot. I don’t remember whether she taught me or just reminded me when I forgot.
