Looks like it has potential.

Interesting.

My first thought is "oh god this is another reboot", down to the parody-of-itself soundtrack. (Although it didn't have the chorus, which is classy)

On the other hand though, it has most of the same creative team and no one knows anything whatsoever about the plot (which is a good thing).

Probably worth a watch, just to see what it's about.

Well I think it's supposed to be another phase in the story, not so much a "reboot" in the typical sense.

What immediately jumps out at me is damn...the Matrix was really over 20 years ago, huh? Don't get me wrong: everyone looks great! But also, they're obviously 20+ years older, too. But also, it has a very different look to it. Like, obviously it's gonna have a different look to a degree. This is gonna be completely digital, no 35mm, and so cinematically looks more modern. Yet it's not just that: the color palette looks different and the lighting is a lot softer. Like the simulation has updated its hardware and is making everything look more idyllic.

It'll be interesting to see. I don't think anything even *can* hit the highs of the original Matrix just because that was such a product of its time, came out of nowhere, and became so popular that we've seen a million things inspired by it at this point - including more Matrix movies! So it will lack the kind of "originality" of the first (inasmuch as the first was more "original" in how it mashed up pre-existing elements of other movies, directors, cultures, and whatnot). As much as I'd maybe be *more* interested in a new movie that *didn't* feature Keanu Reeves, bringing him back definitely sell it better. And while I love Yahya Abdul-Mateen and support putting him in more stuff, I do worry that he's too much Morpheus to not wonder why they didn't bring Laurence Fishburne back.

I don't have high expectations for this. I'll wait until it's been out for a month or two, and see what the audience (sure as hell not trusting the professional "critics") says about it.

I mean, I generally don't trust the "general audiences" any more than I trust "critics." But I like seeing what both are saying because it's never really a monolith, and I there are critics that I think do have a good sense of cinema, what works and doesn't work, and have sensibilities I appreciate. I feel like the internet hatred of critics is unnecessarily exaggerated for no actually good reason.

I have hope for it considering back when I actually still watched the matrix at all (which was quite a while back now) I liked the matrix sequels too, and now that I have a new perspective on even the sequels that... apparently either a lot of people don't notice or don't care to notice the sequels have new meaning to me.

Actually removing the clarification from this post. Might start an argument.
