The movie “Every Breath You Take” is frustratingly bad (no spoilers)

As if sharing a name with a Police song isn’t bad enough…

The movie is definitely a drama, so it’s true to its genre. That’s the one good mark it gets from me.

A lot of the movie feels disjointed, especially the first quarter or half. It’s one cut after another and doesn’t bother to tell you how much time has elapsed. Makes it hard to attach to or care about the main cast and doesn’t even give you a chance to empathize with their emotional turmoil. Because while the movie goes on to outright say they feel it, you never need to empathize with them - you just get to watch them reacting and responding to it in their own ways… which may or may not be out of character for them - you’ll never know, because the character development is incredibly thin. They are one dimensional and about as interesting as watching paint drying on the wall.

The entire main plot and every subplot of the movie would’ve been resolved if the three main characters (a dysfunctional family) actually talked to each other for five minutes, which makes it equally as irritating because the wife in the family even outright states that she and her husband haven’t talked about a family tragedy that took place years ago. So like, I’m not entirely sure why the movie chooses to be this in your face. And for reasons unknown and unexplored, the family’s teenage daughter doesn’t talk to either of them and they kind of just, don’t care? Don’t acknowledge it? It’s really bizarre how the movie handles this dynamic.

The movie’s shocking twist is HEAVILY telegraphed way early on and makes you feel like it’s too stupid to actually be the real twist - but it is. Which is laughably disappointing.

I watched this movie twice, hoping I overlooked an iota of genius in it. I guess there’s a well-acted scene or two late in the movie, but that’s the best you’ll get from it.

I recommend it if you want an average drama on in the background, but I wouldn’t devote any real focus to it. Even paying it half your mental focus allows you to see through the paper thin plot twist and writing flaws.

A solid 2 or 3 out of 10, in my opinion.

Anyone else see this one, yet?

As somebody else who always says this, for once, I can’t.
This movie is just too infuriating.

I would give it a four. It is predictable and clearly inspired by Cape Fear with DeNiro.

But not one to watch more than once... for me lol
