Why is the adult age of consent 16 in most parts of the World?

We learned in the UK that everyone becomes a fully grown adult by their 16th birthday and they are ready to have intercourse with older people and get full time jobs to help the British society. As long as they don't get any employment gaps on their CV then they should be good candidates for a more highly paid job.

Why is the adult age of consent 16 in most parts of the World?

Is it?

Wikipedia says
Ages of majority (2020):
*Age of majority is 16 in Scotland, not 18 like the rest of the United Kingdom.
The age of majority is the threshold of adulthood as recognized or declared in law. It is the moment when minors cease to be considered such and assume legal control over their persons, actions, and decisions, thus terminating the control and legal responsibilities of their parents or guardian over them. Most countries set the age of majority at 18, but some jurisdictions have a higher age and others lower. The word majority here refers to having greater years and being of full age as opposed to minority, the state of being a minor. The law in a given jurisdiction may not actually use the term "age of majority". The term typically refers to a collection of laws bestowing the status of adulthood. Those under the age of majority are referred to as minors and may be legally denied certain privileges or rights (e.g the right to vote, buy alcohol, marry, sign a binding contract)
Age of majority should not be confused with the age of maturity, age of sexual consent, marriageable age, school-leaving age, drinking age, driving age, voting age, smoking age, gambling age, etc., which each may be independent of and set at a different age from the age of majority.

I didn't say the age of majority. I asked about the adult age of sexual consent. The adult age of sexual consent is 16 in most parts of the World.

[quote=“ ”]The age of consent is the age at which a person is considered to be legally competent to consent to sexual acts. Consequently, an adult who engages in sexual activity with a person younger than the age of consent is unable to legally claim that the sexual activity was consensual, and such sexual activity may be considered child sexual abuse or statutory rape. The person below the minimum age is regarded as the victim, and their sex partner is regarded as the offender, unless both are underage[citation needed]. One purpose of setting an age of consent is to protect an underage person from sexual advances.
Age of consent laws vary widely from jurisdiction to jurisdiction,[1] though most jurisdictions set the age of consent in the range 14 to 18. The laws may also vary by the type of sexual act, the gender of the participants or other considerations, such as involving a position of trust; some jurisdictions may also make allowances for minors engaged in sexual acts with each other, rather than a single age. Charges and penalties resulting from a breach of these laws may range from a misdemeanor, such as corruption of a minor, to what is popularly called statutory rape.

Going by surface area rather than population, the maps seem to exhibit around half of the world sets that age at 18. (The map projection used is probably not an equi-areal projection so that might be a misimpression.)

But it seems to vary from 9 to 21.

The first article I referenced here in this post says that in most of the world (that is, I assume, where most of the population lives), the age is between 14 and 18.
But it varies whether the act is homo- or hetero-sexual;
whether the parties are married to each other;
and whether the older person is in a position of authority over the younger.

I’d guess there is no single age, to the nearest year, which is the age of consent for most of the world.
But the median age is probably around 16; at any rate it’s between 14 and 18.

Assuming I’ve understood what you meant, and in what sense the premise of your question is true, your question remains: why?

And I don’t know.

I’d suggest you read up on the sites and cites in the Wikipedia articles, especially about the movements to change the age of consent.

If you find out (1) why those movements started and (2) why they failed, you’ll probably get an idea why the age of consent is what it is.
